Jackie speaks out at school board meeting about the district office hiring of a felony "Executive Director."

Wednesday, May 23, 2018

Another speaker during the May 14 meeting was Jackie Johansen, a teacher in another school district who lives in Menifee.

"If [Velez] is being considered, who recommended him or vetted Mr. Velez and why was he selected for the position?" Johansen asked. "Was he a longtime friend of anyone already in the district?

"Were the appropriate procedures followed in flying and attempting to fill this position? If so, I cannot imagine that Mr. Velez would still emerge as a top-level candidate in our great district."

A stylish two-story structure with lavish decorations right down to the restrooms, the facility includes an elaborate water feature outside the main entrance..." As a 19-year science teacher, the sciences are very important to me. Hands-on science education is such a fun way to learn and to make real-world applications. Some methods that I use were published by the California Science Teacher’s Association in an article called, “Let’s get them outside!”

As a science teacher, I am lucky enough to be able to take my students to several outdoor venues where students have the opportunity to learn in a natural environment. This has been an invaluable part of their education experience: students can multiply their knowledge of field methods, make strides in their environmental stewardship, and learn to use NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). Based on my observations of student learning in outdoor environments, I set out to find answers about how inquiry and participatory education opportunities affect the attitudes of students towards nature.
